fallout 4 underwaterThere are plenty of games that we didn’t think needed a movie, but got a movie anyway, like Need for Speed, which for the most part has been a racing game that oddly enough warranted a movie. There is also Minecraft which never really had a proper story, but yet due to its popularity, a movie based on the game is being made as well.

Now if there ever was a game that could have used a movie, or at least a movie about it would make sense, it would be Bethesda’s Fallout franchise. After all we’ve seen success with movies based on post-apocalyptic stories, and Fallout would certainly fall into that category. However in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Bethesda’s Todd Howard explains why there isn’t one yet.

According to Howard, “We’ve had a couple of in-roads, particularly with Fallout, which is a bit stickier than Elder Scrolls, but everybody’s kind of asked and I’ve taken a number of meetings over the years and nothing quite clicked where I felt, ‘Oh, that would be as good as the game.’” He also expresses his concern about how a movie could affect the Fallout brand, and not necessarily in a good way.

The upside here is that Bethesda isn’t closed to the idea of a movie based on Fallout, but if and when it does, Howard promises the same attention to detail to the movie that they typically pay to their games. “I would say we have a pretty high bar as far as what we would want it to be if it ever happened and nothing’s quite clicked. Even little things like, ‘What does the vault suit look like?’ — every little thing we obsess over so the game is the thing where it really exists.”
