Nexus-6P-silver-01Huawei launched the Huawei P9 recently, but for some reason the company had decided to go with a Full HD display. This is despite the fact that flagship smartphones in the past couple of years have started to adopt QHD displays, and there are talks that smartphone makers could even be considering 4K in the future.

That being said, the good news is that the next Huawei smartphone will pack a QHD display. This is according to Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu who stated that virtual reality was the reason for bumping up their display resolutions. Given that Huawei has recently made their own VR headset, we suppose this makes sense.

According to Yu, he also said that power consumption was the reason as to why Huawei opted to keep pushing Full HD displays. “Last year I would certainly not buy a 2K device as the power consumption was high and the difference to my eyes non-existent. But now I have changed my mind and my next phone will be 2K as I like VR!”

We should note that Huawei does have a smartphone with a QHD display in the form of the Nexus 6P, although we suppose one could argue that the phone is more of a Google phone made by Huawei, rather than a Huawei phone per se. We had also heard that Huawei has plans for a flagship phone launch in the US this year, so perhaps that device could see a QHD display.
