You might have heard on the news that there has been a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Ecuador’s pacific coast region. Sprint has responded by making international calls and texts to Ecuador from the United States free and it has also waived charges for voice and SMS while internationally roaming in Ecuador for all Sprint, Virgin Mobile USA, Boost Mobile and Sprint Prepaid customers.

The carrier has said that this waiver remains effective April 16th, 2016 through April 23rd, 2016. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure has said that this is a way for the carrier to show its support for all of its customers who may have friends and family in the region, allowing them to connect without worrying about fees.

We’ve previously seen carriers respond to natural disasters and calamities in this manner so this is not surprising at all. It won’t even be surprising if some of the other major carriers in the country decide to do the same and allow their customers to get in touch with their loved ones in Ecuador without having to worry about the charges.

Sprint most recently provided a similar waiver for international calls and texts to and from Japan when an earthquake struck in the country’s Kumamoto region. That waiver is effective from April 15th, 2016 through April 22nd, 2016.
