With relations between the United States and Cuba thawing, many American companies have now been allowed to move into the island nation, and T-Mobile has joined that list. The carrier today announced that it’s going to land in Cuba this summer, enabling its users to take advantage of more affordable voice calling to Cuba, while customers who travel to Cuba will have access to text, voice and data roaming.
To make this happen, T-Mobile has inked a interconnect and roaming agreement with Empresa De Telecomunicaciones De Cuba, S.A., a telecommunications company in Cuba.
This deal enables T-Mobile to do its part in opening up communications between the United States and Cuba, providing customers with more affordable rates for voice calls as well as the ability to get voice, text and data roaming when they’re in the island nation.
As a result of this agreement, T-Mobile Simple Choice customers will be able to call wireless phones and landlines in Cuba from the United States for $0.60 per minute, and they will also be able to get roaming when they’re in Cuba.
“We have more customers of Cuban descent than any other wireless provider,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile, adding that this is the company’s way to respond to the message those customers were sending and it’s thus making it easier for them to stay in touch with their loved ones in Cuba.
