twitter logoYou might have heard the rumors that Twitter is shutting down in 2017. Now before you panic and start looking for other social media platforms to share your words on, you can relax because Twitter is not shutting down. The company has since come forward to refute the rumors, calling the claim “groundless”.

In a statement to Reuters, a spokesman for the social media platform was quoted as saying, “There is absolutely no truth to the claims whatsoever.” It is unclear as to how the rumors started, but a hashtag for #SaveTwitter has been making its rounds and has been mentioned in over 100,000 tweets.

Some have speculated that the origin of the rumor came from a particular user who basically lamented about Twitter’s poor handling of cases regarding online bullying. Trolling, online bullying, and harassment is to be expected of social media, although the onus really falls onto the platforms to deal with them swiftly and to prevent them from happening.

Twitter has in the past been in the spotlight several times for failing to deal with them, or not doing enough. However in recent months the social media platform has since vowed to redouble their efforts, and have been on a ban wave in trying to rid its network of user accounts known for harassment.
