Google unveiled its Daydream virtual reality platform earlier this year and about a month ago it formally revealed its first virtual reality headset called the Daydream View. The headset also comes with a controller and both of them have been made by Google, that’s an important distinction that the company is pointing out. The Daydream View can now be purchased directly from Google as well as its retail partners in a handful of countries and it arrives on the scene with the YouTube VR app.

The Daydream app is now available for any and all Daydream-compatible smartphones – pretty much Google’s own Pixel handsets at this point in time – the app can be used to watch VR experience and browse a growing collection of games, apps, and videos. The app will automatically put fresh content front and center so users always have something new to experience when they put on their headset.

Some of Google’s most popular apps like Google Play Movies and Google Photos now have support for Daydream. YouTube VR will enable users to watch any and all videos available on the platform on a virtual big screen as well as experience immersive videos made by some of YouTube’s top creators.

Google says that its aim with Daydream is to bring high quality mobile VR to the masses and that this is just the beginning. More apps and games will be arriving for Daydream in the coming weeks and more Daydream-compatible smartphones will be out over the next few months.
