Ask someone to name a hybrid car and chances are that they will think about the Toyota Prius. The company has made great strides in the hybrid car market but now it’s looking to do the same in the electric car market. The biggest car company in Japan has shown today that it’s getting serious about electric cars. It has announced the launch of a new in-house unit today which will focus solely on developing electric cars.

Electric cars are gradually gaining traction but they’re not a part of the mainstream industry as yet. The landscape will change when affordable electric cars like the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3 hit the market. Both will be priced around $30,000 and will be primarily marketed to the average car buyer.

Toyota Motor Corp has said today that it’s setting up a new in-house unit to develop electric cars. The unit is going to be launched next month and will initially be staffed with four persons who will be responsible for planning a strategy that outlines how Toyota is going to develop and market electric cars.

The new unit will gradually expand as it brings in designers, engineers, and other personnel from various existing units of Toyota. It may take a few years for the company to at least show off a prototype of a fully electric car but at least now we know that it will happen at some point in the future.
