There are several successful MMORPGs out there that have been running for years. This includes Everquest, Ultima Online, World of Warcraft, and EVE Online, just to name a few. There is also Asheron’s Call which might not be quite as famous, but it has been in operation since 1999.

In fact one 74-year old grandpa has actually been playing the game since its launch, and unfortunately it looks like he will have to find a new pastime because if you didn’t know, Asheron’s Call will be shutting down at the end of January, 2017. This means that this grandpa along with hundreds or thousands of players will have to bid farewell to a game that they have been playing for the past 18 years.

In the video upload by “We Sleep Talk”, it reads, “This is my grandpa. He’s 74 years old. He’s been playing Asheron’s Call since 1999. It was announced on December 20, 2016 that Asheron’s Call would close all its servers on January 31, 2017. I’m incredibly saddened that he will be losing a game he loves. If you play, you know it’s a close-knit community. There have been weddings and funerals on this game that he has attended with his characters. It’s heart breaking.”

Indeed MMOs are quite the phenomenon in which many players establish relationships with each other after years of playing, from being virtual strangers to becoming best friends, or in some cases even getting married, but we suppose all good things must come to an end.
