Samsung’s “Edge” series of smartphones with curved displays might have been seen as a novelty at the start, but just like with their Note series which was also similarly mocked at the start, the company’s curved display design philosophy is starting to take. So much so that other handset OEMs are introducing similar designs.

Now according to a report out of Korea from ET News (via Reuters), it seems that Google is also interested in the technology. However the report claims that Google will be investing in Samsung’s rival instead, LG Display. The investment is said to be worth around $880 million and it will go towards LG’s production of flexible OLED displays.

Apparently Google is planning on securing enough production for its next Pixel smartphones, although this is the first time we are hearing rumors that future Pixel handsets might sport flexible/curved OLED displays. It’s interesting because Google doesn’t make their own handsets, but rather they source it to other companies such as HTC.

That being said before you get too excited, it doesn’t seem like LG Display might have accepted Google’s investment yet so it might not necessarily pan out, but either way it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt for now.
