We understand that when a company, such as Google, offers its services and products for free, that it means that they need to make money through different means, and that means usually involves ads. But what if you paid full price for a particular product and they still showed you ads anyway, wouldn’t that be kind of irritating? That’s the sentiment of some redditers about the Survey OnePlus recently pushed.

In a Reddit post, members talked about the company pushing “ads” via notifications to its users. As you can see in the screenshot above courtesy of Bharath Kundapura on Twitter, it shows that OnePlus users are receiving a message for the OnePlus 5 on their existing OnePlus devices.

Note that it is not technically “Advertisement” in the sense that this doesn’t seem to be an ad-network. We could interpret it as some kind of marketing activity designed to gather user data however. So “ads” is a term that is loosely used by many people when they see marketing activities.

OnePlus is not the first company to introduce “ads” to its devices. As Android Police notes, in the past companies such as Samsung and HTC have been found equally to be doing such practices. That said, the post on Reddit suggests that this seems to be found in the Open Beta 9 of the phone’s software, and given that the post was made a month ago, things could have changed since then.

Alternatively if nothing’s changed, the post on Reddit also provides users with instructions on what they can do to block these notifications from showing up on their devices, so check it out if you are receiving these ads as well and you want it to stop.
