If you grew up playing the Metroid games on your Nintendo consoles, then 2017 was probably a great year because not only did Nintendo publish Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS, but they also announced that Metroid Prime 4 would be arriving on the Nintendo Switch console.

However this isn’t all Nintendo has up their sleeves as far as the Metroid franchise is concerned. In a series of posts on the ResetEra forums (via Nintendo Life), it seems that a new 2D Metroid game could be in development. It is said that the game is in the early stages of development and is being worked on by an external team.

Details about the game are scarce at the moment, and at this point in time it is unclear if this alleged 2D Metroid title will be finding its way onto the Nintendo Switch, or if it could be a game for the 3DS handheld console, or possibly even both. There is also no telling when the game will be released, but the early development comments suggests that it could be a while before we see it.

Take it with a grain of salt for now, but with E3 2018 taking place in June later this year, hopefully Nintendo will have more information for us by then, if there is any to be had.
