Magellan RoadMate 1200
Posted on Oct 29, 07 09:24 PM PDT

Magellan has readied its RoadMate 1200 that in all probability will be made available for the upcoming Black Friday sales. The Magellan 1200 boasts a 3.5" anti-glare touchscreen display and relies on the Centrality Atlas II GPS receiver instead of everybody's favorite, the SiRFStar III GPS chipset. Each Magellan 1200 comes with pre-loaded maps of the continental US, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, in addition to 1.3 million points of interest. Additional features include voice guidance and QuickSpell that makes it easier to enter addresses. If you're on a tight budget, the Magellan RoadMate 1200 ought to keep you happy with its $200 price tag.

I sent them a mail asking about the POI issue and this is there response
Thank you for contacting Magellan. This email is in response to your query
about the GPS.
I apologize for the delay in replying to your email.
I understand from your mail that, you are looking out for the firmware to fix
the poi problem.
I would like to inform you that currently our engineers are working on that
and very shortly we will release the firmware for the unit.
I am confident that the above information would help you in resolving the
issue. If you have further queries, please get back to us.

did you ever solve your problem with european maps for Magellan 1200? I have the same issue - I was told bythe seller- no problem but I can't seem to find them anywhere.

It's looking for the 5 digit zip code + the 4 digit add_on that the USPS came up with several years ago.

I bought this unit in the US, and was told that you could change maps with the sd card.
I live in Scandinavia, but I have not found anywhere to buy European maps for the unit.
Is this not possible??
Is my GPS useless here in Europe????

had my 1200 magellan for 3 weeks now and I had no problems with it cause I can read the disk, POI's can be seen on the map while driving touch on them it will give you an address and route to it. if you learn to read the disk or instructions it tells you to log out on your map route then. go to your poi,s on the list after that you have to log back on to your map route

Did anyone ever help you fix this problem? I am also having this same issue and wanted to know what you did. When I switch on the unit in my car it gives me the following error
USB Connected
The USB has been connected to the unit. Please follow instructions from PC application for updating maps or software.
I cannot surpass this message.
Can anyone help me out?

I get that same message when I plug in the usb cord from my phone. Are you using the power cord that came with the unit. Pinning is different from a typical USB cable.

@Kenneth,
Pretty uninformed comment on how you are likely to find people in Bangalore who cannot own a GPS! Check the Forbes ten richest people in the world- 4/10 are from India. Most of the money nowadays is being generated in Bangalore. Just shows what a (fat, happy and dumb) peabrain you are!

No exit POI's either. Worse is that my screen freezes up! Seems to be happening more often and I've only bought it a couple of months ago!

I have a the 1200 and i think it's o.k. for the price. The only problem I noticed is with the time zone and date, it's giving me the wrong time, arrival time, and date. If someone out there knows what the problem is with the time zone issues I am having please let me know.

i too had the exit poi problem... but this morning i got it fixed by accident...lets see if i can relay what i did without confusing everyone
i started out to reboot the unit so the time would update so i popped the sd card out and before i put it back in i thought i'd see what would happen if i tried the poi ...when i did it went into the program....it never did ask me for the sd card but also said no info found when i did a inquiry....so i cleared back to the main menu and rebooted..had to push sd card back in then out and back in again.......after that the exit poi's work just fine not sure if it was a fluke or what.....have powered the unit off and on several times and they still work....can search the exit poi's with no problems....hope this helps.......good luck...

the magellan roadmate 1200 works perfect for cheap priceand i also have the garmin nuvi wich i bought for $999.95 4-5 years ago and it cant even look up addresses like the roadmate 1200 i think the magellan roadmate 1200 can beat it for its price and function... you people just need to learn how to appreciate good product all you people do is complain! if you dont like it just return it and try another product that works with your IQ...

I received the 1200 as a Valentine's Day gift, also have that EXIT POI problem. Is it possible to drag or copy files from some source to the SD card (after loading the card on my laptop) and adding to the card? Or copy the card to a larger catd 2GB or 4GB and then add to THAT card? Updating the firmware may only be possible through the card, as well. On the website, tried to create an account, and the zip code/city thing didn't work for me, I keep getting an error that teh city/zip code is wrong, and I KNOW that it IS right....frustrating to say the least...all I wanted was to register my unit....

If it is a charger that provides less than 12V (such as a cell phone charger) you will get this message. It has to be a full 12 Volts.

I have been wanting to buy a GPS, is this one worth buying or should I look at another model. I see alot of good reviews but there looks to be quite a few issues with the unit or the chip itself.
By Bob , 06/01/08 8:02 AM (CommentID #419360)
I saw a motorcycle handle bar setup for the 2000 but not the 1200. I didn't see any attachments for the 1200 probably because it is so new. However this is the main reason why I bought the 1200 was for my Harley.

Yeah, so far i have no issues ith the 1200 but, does the car charger only work o charge the unit?
We had been using it and it died, when we plugged the car charger in it gave the message "The USB has been connected to the unit. Please follow instructions from PC application for updating maps or software."

SiRFstarIII is a high sensitivity GPS microcontroller chip manufactured by SiRF Technology. GPS microcontroller chips interpret signals from GPS satellites and determine the position of the GPS receiver.
The SiRFstarIII chip is distinguished from earlier SiRF chips and from GPS chipsets made by other manufacturers (Garmin or Trimble Inc for example), largely due to its ability to acquire and maintain a signal lock in urban or densely covered forest environments, and its faster Time to First Fix (TTFF), the time it takes for a GPS receiver to lock onto the satellite signals and determine the initial position. The enhanced abilities of the SiRFstarIII chips are made possible by several features.
Is this information is sufficent ?

Kenneth,
I am not sure what made you think that Indian population cannot afford this lazy unit. All these gizmos make your life more lazier than you already are. And for you kind information, go check the companies who manufacture these units, I promise you will find more number of Indians than you can imagine....

I got the 1200 for xmas, and also have the exit poi issue ("insert sd card with maps"). I'll try calling the customer service number, and see how it goes.

wha is everyone talking bout the exit poi's ?
wat kind of problem is it?
By Michael , 28/12/07 2:51 PM (CommentID #409185)
I have the Exit POI problem too. I am an IT guy, so I know the only interface to this thing is through windows explorer. It will see it like it sees a digital camera where you can drag and drop files from the SD card. I popped in my Navionics Lake maps to see what would happen, but the unit just hangs. Probably wasn't supposed to work, but was worth a try. Still a good deal for the price though.

Was given the 1200 by my daughter for me to use not only in the car but on the Harley - Does the 1200 have a cradle the helps protect the screen from the sun while it is attached to the motorcycle - and if so ..Where can one buy it?
By Lee v.l. , 26/12/07 4:32 PM (CommentID #406853)
I'm very disappointed that they didn't provide ANY software to interface the unit to a PC, nor do they have ANY support for an interface on their website.
By Alan Hamann , 26/12/07 12:15 PM (CommentID #406643)
I called Tech support and was told there is no way to upgrade the 1200 to a map of canada. I dont believe it, bit what can I do.
I wonder if the downloads for the other models would work on my roadmate 1200.
Also does anyone know if you can update the POI.
Al

According to my documentation, the RoadMate 1200 uses the SiRFStar III, not the Centrality Atlas II chipset.
By Gary , 25/12/07 10:58 PM (CommentID #405947)
Found it easy to use. I how it tell you ahead of
time when to turn and when your turn is coming up.
Also like how it recalulate if you miss your turn.
In all the addresses I put into it, it took me there without any mistakes. I will rate it as good
to very good. BUT! where can I get additional chips for it, store didn't seem to have any. Maybe
straight from Magellan Co themselves.
By david , 25/12/07 9:57 AM (CommentID #405411)
I see a lot of comments but no answers.
the points of interest do work on my device but only when im driving. I set them before hand. i like to know where gas stations and atms are. when driving, they pop up and i touch the screen for the exact info such as, telephone # and distance.
The device works well and the speech is loud. I drive a convertible car and can still hear the accurate turn by turn directions. Many users who dislike the device fail to insert the instructional cd. I prefer the 2d mode because scrolling around the map is easier.
Thats my 2cents and remember, when all else fails,
read the directions or insert the cd.

Another Black friday CC buyer here. The unit works great and for the price....well what can I say......it's a great deal. It's 99.999999% spot on. It reroutes quickly and accurately if you pass up a turn or exit. Quite impressed. The in-laws want one now. Cheapest I've found now is $149.?!?! Still do-able.

Does anyone know if Magellan Roadmate 1200 works with a 2 GB SD Card? The unit comes with a 1 GB SD Card and has a little over 52 MB free on it. I need some more space to store more POIs on it. Will it work if I copy the contents of 1 GB SD Card to a 2GB Card?

I went through thw www.ayopahrewards.com shopping mall that has over 500 stores and found this unit also at Circut City. The nice thing that there wer no lines when I went to picked it up and I got a little cashback when I used the free membership at www.ayopahrewards.com. I'd say, Get the memebrship, get the unit, Get some cash back...it's a no brainer!

Is there a PC Software for this unit? On their website there is VantagePoint, and MapSend Manager. None of them seems to work with device.

Its a nice unit. I am disappointed with the availability of maps. I am spending two weeks in Germany (I live in the US) and thought I could get the Germany SD and be in business. The unit picks up satellites in Germany but I have had very little luck finding the SD with German maps. A couple of calls to the customer service number routed me to Bangalore, India where probably none of the population can afford a GPS much less know how one works. I've been here two days and I am still hoping I can somehow get my hands on a German SD or at least a download of a German map. Otherwise, this is a great unit. For the poster trying to disable the POI's, I think I read some kind of caveat about having to be on a highway or something to that nature.

To anyone who purchased this GPS - does the "Exit POIs" function work for you ? I only get an error box "Please insert SD card with map"... Returned it because I thought I got a defective unit, but the new one gives the same error.

I'm somewhat confused by the reference to the SiRFStarIII. According to Magellan's website, it does use SiRFStarIII which I'm guessing is the satellite technology. Magellan's website leaves a lot to be desired in its coverage of this particular model. Can anyone give me more info on this, please?
