Trekker is a GPS system for the blind and visually impaired that uses GPS and digital maps to help blind persons find their way in urban and rural areas. GPS navigation systems are great tools for everyday folk, but what about the blind? They, too, need maps to help them get around all the more than visually able folk. Trekker has not forgotten about the blind by offering a GPS system that can be retrofitted onto a PDA, complementing existing aids such as white canes and guide dogs by providing the most natural route possible while recording both vocal and written notes. Main features of the Trekker include real time information detection, real time map browsing, route planning and recording, and vocal information, all packed into a device measuring 87mm x 134mm x 27mm and weighing 600 grams.
