The excitement surrounding the Wii 2’s controller is building up tremendously. Already rumored-to-death to sport a 6-inch touchscreen, Kotaku says it’s confirmed with several sources that the controller will have a 6.2-inch touchscreen and eight buttons. This resonates with IGN’s mock-up above of the new controller. Kotaku further notes that Wii gamers who are accustomed to swinging a Wii Remote and Nunchaku shouldn’t be worried, the new console will apparently also use the same or similar tech for games going forward. This makes sense, given that we’ve heard the Wii 2 will be backwards compatible with Wii games.

Nintendo’s no stranger to giving gamers choice in choosing what type of controller to pick up for certain games. In Mario Kart Wii, gamers could use the Wii Remote, Wii Remote + Nunchaku, Classic Controller or a GameCube pad to race. Kotaku hears that the same will be for the Wii 2. Games will support the new motion controls and this new touchscreen controller that’s aimed at the hardcore.

We’ll know for sure at Nintendo’s E3 conference this June. Stay tuned.
