Google MapsGLGreat news for fans of Google Maps, Google has just announced a brand new update for desktop version of Google Maps which enables WebGL support. What this means is that it’ll be able to harness the power of your graphics card without the need to install any additional software – just run it within a WebGL-supported browser such as the latest versions of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

In addition to running more smoothly, WebGL support enhances the transitions from Maps to Street View, enables vector drawings on Google Maps (like Maps for mobile), and more. Basically you end up with a nicer-looking and smoother experience on Google Maps for the desktop. To use Google MapsGL, all you have to do is opt-in to support it on the Google Maps website (the option will only pop up on supported computers). Check out the video demonstration of MapsGL:
