Nissan LEAFElectric vehicles are definitely the way to go if we were looking to do our part in saving the environment by reducing our carbon emissions, and apparently China shares those sentiments as well and has announced the country’s goal of putting out 5 million electric vehicles on its roads by the year 2020. As a short term goal, the country is looking to sell at least 500,000 hybrid or electric vehicles by by 2015. So how will they achieve this rather lofty goal?

In order for the Chinese government to hit their goal of 5 million EVs on the road by 2020, it has been reported that the government will begin by boosting EV technology innovation, establishing a research and development system, increase EV charging infrastructure (which we think is really important since no one likes their EVs dying on them in the middle of nowhere), recycling electric batteries (a move Honda is currently making, which will in turn help to reduce the amount of rare-earth metals consumed), developing pilot programs and probably the most attractive incentive of all: individual subsidiaries, thus making the purchase of an EV a more affordable investment. Will China be successful in their efforts? It’s hard to say now, but at least they’re making an effort.
