AT&T logoA while back it was announced by the FCC that they would be working hand in hand with carriers to create a database of stolen phones. These phones will be locked and prevented from being used by the thief and has enlisted the major carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint. As part of their effort to help cut down on mobile phone theft, AT&T has since launched a “Smart Controls” website of their own. This website will not list stolen phones nor will it let users lock their stolen phones remotely. Instead this website is meant to be a precursor to the FCC’s plans and will help educate the public on the various methods that they can employ to ensure their phones are protected.

While we guess it might be hard to protect oneself against someone holding a gun or a knife or a snatch thief, the website instead lists the different methods of protection that users can employ to protect their data and contents of their phone in the event that it has been stolen. There are also tutorials for backing up your SIM card data, along with a list of different products that users can purchase to further ensure the protection of their device. If you’d like to learn more about AT&T’s newly launched initiative, head on over to their Smart Controls website for the details.
