nikon-logoWhen you mention the name Nikon, cameras probably come to mind as that is what the company is most well-known for, at least in commercial circles. However is that all Nikon has to offer the public? Just cameras? Well according to Nikon’s president, Makoto Kimura, it seems that the Japanese company is currently working on “secret products” that will be hitting the market in under five years’ time. This was in response to an interview where Kimura raised some concerns about the falling sales of compact cameras, which he believed was due to the rise of smartphones which allowed photographers to snap high quality images without the need for an additional device.

According to Kimura, “The number of people taking snapshots is exploding by use of smartphones that sold 750 million or so last year and are still growing. We’ve centralized our ideas around cameras but can change our approach to offer products to that bigger market […] We want to create a product that will change the concept of cameras. It could be a non-camera consumer product.” The last sentence is of interest, especially when he declined to comment on whether Nikon could be working on a smartphone of their own. While it is highly speculative, what do you guys think if Nikon were to enter the smartphone market?
