Over the past few weeks countless mockups of the iPhone 6 have leaked online. We have seen mockups of both rumored display sizes, 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches. A new report published today claims that they don’t really show the final design of this much awaited smartphone, instead a few changes will be made before the device is shown off to the public.
Apple opted for an aluminum panel for the iPhone 5 and it kept that very same design for the existing flagship, iPhone 5s. However in order to ensure that the internal radios had a window to the outside world it used glass on the top and bottom.
Most of the mockups that we have seen up till now don’t show these glass windows. Instead we only see lines separating the top and the bottom where glass has been replaced by some unknown material. It can’t all be metal since that would interfere with the internal radios.
Japanese publication Nikkei reports that these lines are actually placeholders where the glass windows will be put in. If this is true that the rear of the iPhone 6 would look a lot like that of the iPhone 5s. This also explains why many of the mockups show a round camera flash even though Apple shifted to a pill-shaped dual-color flash with the iPhone 5s. It may simply be a placeholder as well.
The report also claims that this time around the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone would be fashioned out of aluminum. This would be a departure from Apple’s traditional practice of engraving the logo on its smartphones.
Apple is likely to show off its two new iPhones this September. Until then, expect the rumor parade to march on.
