nokia-lumia-1520-review-17If there was one thing Microsoft did to anger their Windows Phone fans a couple of years ago was when they announced that Windows Phone 7 handsets would not be upgraded to Windows Phone 8. Naturally this did not sit well with Windows Phone users as it essentially meant that they had to get a new phone just to get new software.

Now the good news is that if you’re a Windows Phone 8 user and you were wondering about your eligibility for Windows Phone 9, if and when it is released, you can rest assured knowing that your handset will most likely be able to accept the update. This is according to the folks at NPU who claim that Windows Phone 9 will be available on all Windows Phone 8 devices.

However they note that it is possible that not all the features will be carried across and we guess that is fair. This is similar to Apple’s iOS updates in which much older handsets will not be getting some features that might require more memory or processing power. NPU also claims that there is a chance that the developer preview for Windows Phone 9 should make an appearance in January 2015, which is in line with a previous rumor which suggested an early 2015 release.

Take it with a grain of salt for now, but last we heard there was a possibility Microsoft could be thinking of unifying their ARM-based operating systems such as Windows RT and Windows Phone. In fact there was even talks about Microsoft possibly dropping the Windows Phone brand in favor of a “Windows” brand.
