office-androidEarlier this morning, we did bring you word that Microsoft Office for iOS has been released, and it will be a free for all situation – which bodes well for Microsoft, since it would allow more people to take up the offer, and who knows? It might end up to be one of those indispensable tools for iOS users in due time, so to speak. Having said that, Office for Android tablets was also unveiled, accompanied by confirmation of a Windows touch version that is heralded to arrive some time next year.

Those who are interested in the preview version of Office for Android will be able to sign up for it, and here are additional juicy details on the app. For starters, Office for Android tablets will play nice only with tablets that run on Android 4.4 KitKat or newer, which means that many of the older tablets that folks own out there will not be able to groove with it.

Having said that, this should not be too much of an issue, since Office for Android is not quite ready for a prime release just yet, and the preview itself will only be available in December. This translates to the various tablet manufacturers out there being given time to roll out a software update that will bump up the Android version to a compatible one. Best of all is, with Office for Android, there is no longer any need for an Office 365 subscription to use them. [Press Release]
