Microsoft is preparing to expand its backward compatibility ecosystem by bringing Xbox 360 games to Windows PCs. According to internal developer documentation obtained by The Verge, the strategic initiative will allow classic console titles to run on PCs, handheld gaming devices, and Project Helix, Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox platform.
Expected to roll out gradually between 2027 and 2028 alongside next-generation hardware releases, the broader strategy seeks to establish a unified digital games library that follows players across different devices rather than remaining tied to a specific console generation.
Unlike an automatic blanket conversion of the entire legacy catalog, this new backward compatibility framework will rely directly on developers and publishers. Individual rights holders will selectively choose which Xbox 360 titles to adapt, while retaining complete control over pricing structures and potential inclusion in the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
Technically, Microsoft may utilize a proprietary emulation layer or provide developers with migration tools to adapt legacy titles for modern Windows system architecture. This project builds upon an earlier effort bringing original Xbox games to PC, which is targeted for a full catalog release in October 2026. Expanding to the Xbox 360 catalog could unlock popular franchises like Gears of War, Fable, and Forza Motorsport, though expired music licenses or commercial agreements may prevent certain games from returning.
The leaked documentation also outlines a physical-to-digital disc conversion system. By inserting an Xbox One or Series X physical disc into a compatible console disc drive, users receive a digital license linked simultaneously to their account and the original disc. If the physical media is sold or transferred, the digital entitlement moves alongside the disc to prevent unauthorized duplicate usage. While a testing phase was planned for July before facing delays, general release was slated for August. Microsoft has not officially confirmed these plans, meaning details remain subject to change prior to 2027.
