You might recall that a couple of months ago, we reported about a small drone that can be worn on your wrist and at a command, fly off from your wrist and start taking selfies of you in photos or video format. This will undoubtedly provide users with interesting angles and perspectives that they might not be able to get normally.

The Nixie was part of Intel’s Make It Wearable competition where it was one of the finalists. Well it looks like the drone has recently been announced as the winner of the competition at an event in San Francisco. The team behind the project will be taking home a very cool $500,000 in prize money which will presumably be used to help fund their research and development efforts.

The Nixie is aimed at those who are into adventure sports, such as rock climbing where whipping out your smartphone to take a selfie might not necessarily be the smartest or safest thing one can do. It also takes out a lot of steps involved in taking a selfie as the Nixie drone will pretty much automate everything thanks to its features where it can either follow you around and snap photos and videos, or you can use it in “boomerang” mode where it will fly away, take a photo, and fly straight back.

Unfortunately it is still very much up in the air (pun intended) as to when the Nixie will be made a reality. The device is still in its prototype stage and the prize money will be used to help improve upon it, such as its propellers, motors, as well as making it a lot smaller than its prototype. In the meantime you can get an idea of what the Nixie is about in the video above.
