verizon-logo-stone-wallGiven that we’ve seen a lot of patent disputes over the years, we’re sure you’re wondering who might be next to sue whom? While that’s still pretty much open to guesses, it looks like Verizon and Google will not be headed into the courts anytime soon, at least not regarding patent disputes.

Verizon has recently announced via its Public Policy blog that they have entered into a patent licensing deal with Google. This isn’t so much because Verizon has plans of making their own mobile devices, but rather to fend off attacks from patent trolls who have in the past been known to sue all sorts of companies over the vaguest forms of patents.

According to Verizon, “Verizon has long championed patent reforms and industry actions that promote innovation. We’re pleased that today’s licensing deal with Google will help reduce the supply of patents that so-called patent trolls can assert against us.” Verizon has also indicated that more patent deals are expected to be signed in the future as well with other tech companies.

Unsurprisingly the terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed and we can’t be sure which patents are covered in the deal and how much Verizon agreed to pay Google, but either way if it means one less frivolous patent lawsuit, why not?
