facebook-unfollowIn the past we have heard rumors that Facebook was thinking about building their own smartphone, although they were rumors that have been shot down countless times by Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Instead Facebook teamed up with companies like HTC to release phones with dedicated Facebook features.

That being said it seems that at one point in time, Facebook had reportedly entered talks with Chinese smartphone OEM Xiaomi in which they discussed the possibility of Facebook acquiring the company through an investment. This is according to a report by Reuters where they revealed that the talks had taken place, although safe to say a deal was never struck.

The discussions had reportedly taken places back in October 2014. Facebook had supposedly offered to invest in Xiaomi, but sources of Reuters revealed that Facebook’s investment was apparently not huge which might explain why Xiaomi was not too keen on it. That and the fact that Facebook is banned in China, so it is unclear as to what other possible gains Facebook could get from such an acquisition.

Xiaomi was also apparently worried that allowing Facebook to acquire the company could somehow damage their relationship with Google. In any case like we said, it’s safe to assume the deal did not go through, but what do you guys think? How does the idea of Facebook acquiring Xiaomi sound to you?
