Despite having unveiled the Apple Watch last year, yesterday at its Spring Forward event Apple spent a considerable amount of time talking about its first smartwatch, and finally revealed when it will ship and how much all of the different models will cost. Google is now reportedly getting to up its Android Wear game. According to a new report the next major software update for Android Wear is going to flip the switch on Wi-Fi support, meaning AW smartwatches won’t require a Bluetooth connection for features like Google Now and notifications.
Most of the Android Wear smartwatches currently available in the market already have Wi-Fi built in. A software update is all that’s required to get the feature working.
The Verge hears from “a source knowledgeable with Android Wear’s product roadmap” that the next update is going to bring Wi-Fi support. Moreover two smaller updates for the platform are also said to be in the pipeline.
Gesture control is a feature which will be included in one of these updates. Once the feature goes live users will be able to flick their wrist in order to scroll notifications and Google Now cards and wouldn’t need to scroll using their other hand.
User interface tweaks are also expected through an update which will focus on making it easier to access Android Wear apps and contacts.
No word as yet on when these Android Wear updates will be released.
