Tesla_circa_1890Even if you aren’t a science geek, the name Nikola Tesla is probably one that you’ve heard before, whether it be in your science textbooks back in high school, video games, or movies. However did you know that Tesla actually predicted that smartphones would eventually come into existence way back in 1926?

According to a quote discovered by Big Think, it seems that even back in 1926 Tesla predicted how technology would evolve to the point where we would one day own smartphones. Tesla was quoted as saying this during an interview with Collier’s magazine from back in the day in which he said:

“We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket.”

It sounds eerily familiar, doesn’t it? In fact it almost sounds like how Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs described the iPhone when it was first launched. While not exactly a prophet, it seems that Tesla understood how technology would progress, enough to predict where one day we would have flying machines that would require no fuel, like the Solar Impulse for example (or maybe he could be talking about drones).
