Vintage Apple iPod devices are highly sought-after technology relics, but they are set to gain modern functionality through new replacement circuit boards developed by Certain Things Studio. These custom boards are designed to modernize classic music players by introducing contemporary features like music streaming.

The available upgrade boards add several modern specifications to the iPod mini (1st and 2nd generations), iPod 3rd generation, and iPod 4th generation with a monochrome display:

  • Bluetooth with support for AirPods.
  • Integrated Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • High-resolution HiFi DAC audio.
  • Digital audio output via USB-C.
  • Storage expansion up to 2TB via an SD card.
  • Extended battery life delivering up to 40 hours.

The project offers two versions depending on user needs. The Sprout Pico board—powered by the Raspberry Pi RP2350—provides core updates, while the Sprout Pi includes an integrated Raspberry Pi Compute Zero module to support music streaming, additional applications, and AirPlay transmission.

Additionally, the entire ecosystem relies on open-source Linux, meaning the Sprout Pi is expected to receive various third-party apps following its launch.

The most notable aspect of the Sprout boards is that they completely replace the original internal hardware while preserving the classic aesthetic. The modular modification is entirely reversible, requires no soldering, and is straightforward enough for users with minimal technical experience.

Pricing for the Sprout Pi and Sprout Pico boards has not yet been officially revealed, but interested enthusiasts can sign up for project updates on the official website.
