One component that truly set the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge apart from the rest was the super-fast UFS 2.0 flash storage. Samsung was the first company to mass produce these chips and integrate them into consumer electronic devices. Other companies have been working on this technology as well but it took them some time to get to a stage where they could start mass producing UFS 2.0 memory chips. SK Hynix is one of those companies and now it’s ready to ship these chips to “global handset makers.”

In simple terms this means that the super-fast onboard memory that you could only get with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge previously will soon be available on mobile devices from other companies as well.

SK Hynix has formally announced that it’s finally in the UFS production game and is currently in talks to supply 64GB super-fast onboard storage chips to handset makers from across the globe.

The chips are able to perform 32,000 input/output operations per second for random reads which means they’re up to three times faster than the existing eMMC 5.0 solution found in many current smartphones.

Industry sources are of the view that SK Hynix’s UFS chips will be making their debut with smartphones and tablets before the end of this year, and will be seen in mid-range and even low-end devices by next year.
