At the moment one of the biggest culprits when it comes to battery consumption on our phones is our display, which is why some users prefer to set their display brightness to the lowest settings possible in a bid to conserve energy. While there are lower-powered displays like e-ink displays, they’re just not as practical.
However it seems that over in the UK, an Oxford University spin-out by the name of Bodle Technologies is working on a display that will apparently require no power, but at the same time will still be legible and visible even under direct sunlight. The company also claims to be in talks with some of the world’s largest tech companies, but unsurprisingly no names were mentioned.
The company was also understandably secretive with its technology, but the gist of it is that it will rely on the same technology used to rewrite DVDs and will use electrical pulses to create its displays. The company’s founder Dr. Peiman Hosseini believes that such technology could impact devices like smartphones and smartwatches.
He also believes that it could be expanded to be used in buildings, where the technology could create smart windows that blocks infrared waves, thus keeping buildings cool without air-conditioning. It will most likely be a while before we actually see this technology become mainstream, but based on what we are hearing, we can’t wait for it!
