volvo-xc90-hybridVolvo has built up a reputation of being a very safe car with innovations like pedestrian airbags, but even the safest car in the world today will still be unable to prevent one from dying in a particularly nasty accident. However, it seems that Volvo has put out a stunning pledge – that by the time 2020 rolls around, no one in their cars or SUVs will die or get seriously injured in any kind of accident.

Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of Volvo Cars North America, said, “If you meet Swedish engineers, they’re pretty genuine. They don’t say things when they don’t believe in it.” Of course, there is a caveat in this particular statement, that if someone on purpose would like to hurt themselves, then it is out of Volvo’s hands. However, for the rest of the ordinary folk who follow driving rules carefully and are alert enough all the time, a fatality-free vehicle from Volvo sounds like a pretty darn good idea.

It looks like the push for autonomous driving has raised the bar when it comes to automotive safety, since it forces one to think thoroughly as to every potential situation that could happen with a vehicle. Even if one were to drive the car, such safety systems will continue to function in the background, taking over whenever danger is sensed. All in all, it is a pretty bold claim, don’t you think so?
