Cars are typically designed with safety in mind and come with all kinds of safety features, and if there is a car company known for their safety features, it would be Volvo. The company has a pretty good reputation for building sturdy cars chockful of safety features, and now it seems that Volvo wants to build on it further.

The company has recently announced that in future Volvo cars, the carmaker will be imposing a speed limit of 180kph. According to Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive, “Volvo is a leader in safety: we always have been and we always will be. Because of our research we know where the problem areas are when it comes to ending serious injuries and fatalities in our cars. And while a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it’s worth doing if we can even save one life.”

At the moment cars can pretty much go as fast as they can, where obeying the speed limits is entirely up to the driver. However with this new feature, cars will automatically impose those limits on its drivers, although admittedly 180kph is still pretty fast. In addition to these speed limits, Volvo will also explore how geofencing technology can be used to create smart speed control, especially in areas around hospitals or schools to help prevent accidents that might arise from driving too fast.
