Facebook has made no secret of the fact that it wants Facebook Messenger to be more than just a chat service, it wants it to be more of a platform, and the plans to make that happen have been very much put in motion. The company has teamed up with KLM to enable passengers to receive flight updates through Facebook Messenger. Passengers have to agree to receive updates through the service when they’re booking their ticket.

Once the option is selected and the ticket is booked, KLM will start a chat thread with the customer on Facebook Messenger where it will send them their confirmation and flight status. Any changes to the flight status will also be conveyed through Facebook Messenger.

KLM will even dispatch a boarding pass through Facebook Messenger which passengers will be able to use to not only go through security at the airport but to also board their flight.

If that wasn’t enough, KLM will provide support as well, so passengers will be able to talk to the airline’s representatives about any queries that they might have as if they were chatting with a friend on Facebook.

Facebook’s David Marcus, who leads the Messenger team at the company, mentions that KLM is the “first airline partner,” which certainly looks like a hint that more airlines will soon be jumping on this bandwagon as well.
