iphone-7-displayThere have been many rumors in recent times to suggest that 2017’s iPhone could sport an OLED display. Recently those rumors have been seemingly confirmed by Sharp’s CEO, but now thank to a recent SEC filing discovered by an investment firm, there is more evidence to suggest that 2017’s iPhone could indeed be packing an OLED display.

According to the SEC filing discovered by J.P. Morgan, it seems that Apple has placed a purchase order for more than a year’s duration that is worth around $4 billion. The firm believes that this has to do with a huge order of OLED displays that Apple has placed with Samsung for the next-gen iPhone.

Given that Apple tends to prefer sourcing from different suppliers, the idea that they might be buying from Sharp and Samsung at the same time doesn’t really come as a surprise. However whether or not this purchase order is for the iPhone remains to be seen. As it stands Apple already uses OLED in some of its products, like the Apple Watch.

More recently it was discovered that the OLED displays of the Touch Bars in the new MacBook Pros are being supplied by Samsung, so it is possible that the order could be for that as well. That being said, the shift to OLED is one that is widely expected anyway, but until we get the official confirmation, maybe try not to get your hopes up too high just yet.
