moto-x-2017With the announcement of the Moto Z handsets earlier this year, many were wondering what would become of the Moto X series. Before the Moto Z was launched, the Moto X was Motorola’s flagship lineup, so with the Moto Z being the new flagship, it makes sense that users are curious about the fate of the Moto X family.

However Motorola has since reassured users that the Moto X will not be replaced, and thanks to a leaked photo obtained by the folks at Tech Droider, it seems that we can look forward to a new Moto X handset in 2017. The image pictured to the right is allegedly that of the Moto X (2017) model, and apparently it features a metal chassis which is a nice change of pace from before.

For those who are wondering about Moto Mod compatibility, from what we can tell in the photo, it seems that the Moto Mods might be an exclusive to the Moto Zs as the handset pictured does not seem to sport the connectors that are required to link the Moto Mods to it. This would be a bit of a pity since we’re sure that opening up the Moto Mods will help with the adoption, but for whatever reason support isn’t present here.

No word on the specs of the phone just yet, and given that the Moto Z was the high-end phone for Motorola this year, we’re not sure if having competing high-end handsets in 2017 is really the best idea. In any case take it with a grain of salt, but hopefully more details regarding specs and availability will be revealed soon.
