The Amazon Echo is a speaker that comes with a built-in voice assistant. While you can’t exactly hold conversations with Alexa, you can ask it to tell you the weather, the latest news, use it to control certain devices in your home, call you a cab, order you a pizza, read you a book, and more.

However it seems that over in Japan, there is a device called the Gatebox that functions similarly to the Echo, but takes things to the next level. In fact it almost feels like the Gatebox was largely inspired by Spike Jonze’s “Her” movie. As you can see in the video above, Gatebox is a device that projects a 3D character inside a glass tube.

It will be able to wake you up in a cutesy kind of way, remind you to bring an umbrella as it looks like it might rain, and even warns you when you’re about to be late for work. It can even text you to tell you to hurry home, and will also be able to control your household appliances so that when you come home, the lights, heater, and more will already be turned on before you arrive.

It almost seems a bit creepy at how realistic Gatebox is, but this is based on the promo video so in terms of actual use, we’re not sure how well it actually functions. It is also not cheap as it is priced at a little under $3,000. It also cannot speak or understand English for now, so if you wish to communicate with it, you’ll want to brush up on your Japanese.
