Apple has officially announced the launch of its latest iMac model powered by the new M6 processor, following the recent rollout of updated iPad mini, Mac mini, and Mac Studio devices. The new desktop machine promises significant performance enhancements and a massive leap in artificial intelligence processing, driven by additional processor cores and newly integrated Neural Accelerators embedded within each core.

The M6 chip architecture equips the entry-level desktop with up to a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Combined with a memory bandwidth of 170GB/s, these hardware upgrades deliver graphics performance that is twice as fast as the preceding M4 model. Base configurations start with 16GB of unified memory, with optional upgrades available for 24GB and 32GB.

Optimized primarily for daily productivity, Apple reports that the new iMac operates up to 50 percent faster in applications like Microsoft Excel compared to its predecessor, and up to 2.5 times faster than original M1 versions. Furthermore, the hardware handles demanding creative applications efficiently, offering up to double the ray-tracing gaming performance alongside accelerated photo and video editing capabilities.
A primary focus for the hardware release centers on on-device machine learning capabilities. According to benchmark figures provided by Apple, the device achieves up to five times faster prompt processing speeds in LM Studio compared to the M4, and up to 12 times the speed of the M1 series. Operating on macOS 27, the desktop integrates the next generation of Apple Intelligence and an upgraded Siri, allowing users to query information across personal emails and photos, alongside deep integration into Spotlight.
Externally, the physical design remains consistent with a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display featuring 500 nits of brightness and P3 wide color support. Connectivity upgrades include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet, though the system supports Thunderbolt 4 rather than the faster Thunderbolt 5 standard. Users can connect up to two external 6K displays.
Additional hardware components include a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, color-matched accessories with Touch ID, and a selection of seven aesthetic finishes. Pre-orders begin at $1,499 for the 10-core configuration with 16GB of RAM, while the 12-core variant starts at $1,699.
