Everyone knows that weekends are for you to rest. However sometimes depending on the job, more often than not we receive emails on the weekend as well, which some of us feel like we’re obligated to tend to otherwise we could be perceived as being lazy, which in turn could lead to loss of opportunities for promotions, raises, and more.

However for those who are living in France, starting from the 1st of January, 2017, workers can avoid tending to work emails legally without any fear of repercussions like what we mentioned above. This new law will apply to organizations that have more than 50 people under their employ, with the aim being that they want to reduce negative side-effects such as being burnt off, sleeplessness, and relationship problems.

Companies will now have to negotiate with their employees on their rights to switch off and the ways that they can prevent work from creeping into their private lives even on the weekends. If a deal cannot be reached with employees, companies will then have to publish a charter that makes explicit demands of what can or cannot be done on the weekends.

This is something that has been talked about in France for a while, and it looks like it has finally come to pass. In the meantime it looks like the rest of us from around the world will just have to keep working as usual.
