France seeks to play a leading role in the effort to shift the world to sustainable energy. It has visibly stepped up after the United States decided to leave the Paris climate accord. The country’s newly elected President Emmanuel Macron called on scientists and researchers based in the United States to come to France and continue their work as they could consider it their second home. France now seems to be interested in banning the sale of all petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

According to multiple reports, the country’s environmental minister has said that France is seriously thinking about banning the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040. It hasn’t been made clear if the minister was talking about an official position of the Macron administration and the minister also hasn’t said how this ban is going to be implanted.

The Guardian reports that France’s minister of ecological and solidarity transition Nicolas Hulot said that this is going to be a “veritable revolution.” He also added that French car manufacturers have enough ideas to make this promise a reality.

France isn’t the only country that’s thinking about this move. Norway already has a target in place to allow the sale of electric and plug-in hybrids only by 2025. Both Germany and the Netherlands are also considering similar bans.
