BMW has unveiled the iX5 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in China, a standalone variant designed exclusively for the Chinese automotive market.
Set to officially launch in 2027, the electric SUV introduces extended dimensions, upgraded interior technology, and a driving range exceeding 620 miles (1,000 km) on the CLTC cycle.
Extended Design and Interior Updates
According to Electrek, the defining feature of the iX5 LWB is its extended 3,165 mm wheelbase, which is 130 mm longer than standard models sold in North America and Europe. Exterior styling updates include exclusive diagonal light icons, illuminated accent strips, and BMW’s signature Kidney Iconic Glow grille.
Inside, the cabin features a monochromatic color layout alongside specialized seating for front and rear passengers. Upfront, the vehicle debuts BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, featuring Panoramic Vision and a dedicated front passenger display.
Rear passengers gain access to the BMW Theater Screen, a large 8K resolution display intended for video streaming, gaming, and mobile productivity.
Technology and Drive Dynamics
The vehicle incorporates a localized driver assistance framework developed alongside Chinese autonomous technology company Momenta. The system provides “Address-to-Address” automated driving capabilities specifically tailored to Chinese road infrastructure.
To preserve ride comfort across the extended chassis, an adaptive two-axle air suspension setup comes installed as standard equipment.
Range and Global Comparisons
While full battery specifications for the Chinese model remain undisclosed, BMW projects a total CLTC driving range above 620 miles.
By comparison, the European-spec iX5 60 xDrive utilizes a 141 kWh battery delivering up to 525 miles (750 km) of WLTP range.
The upcoming US variant is expected to feature a 144 kWh battery, targeting an estimated EPA range of approximately 435 miles.
