The last time we were treated to a Spawn movie, it was way, way back in 1997. While it wasn’t a terrible movie, it wasn’t exactly the best either. However given that back then movie studios weren’t exactly churning out superhero movies, for its time it was pretty decent. The good news is that if you were hoping for maybe a “better” treatment of the franchise, you’re in luck.

Announced at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Spawn’s creator Todd McFarlane has officially revealed that a new Spawn movie is in the works, where he will also be directing it, making the Spawn movie his directorial debut. Given that he helped to create Spawn, we guess it is only fitting that he will be directing the new movie.

The movie will be produced by Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions. Unfortunately details about the movie is scarce at the moment, including a cast or a release date, which means that we’ll probably have to wait a while before the details are revealed. McFarlane had actually written the script for the movie last year before the film was officially announced, so it looks like it has been in the works for a while.

Hopefully with today’s movie-making technology and the lessons that we’ve learnt from the various successful (and unsuccessful) superhero movies, this new Spawn movie will be able to deliver what the fans want.
