There was a time when Instagram was only used for sharing pictures that had been brushed up with filters. Ever since Facebook bought the company it has added new functionality to the app. It brought video to Instagram and added the Stories feature. It even added the ability to direct message users and now it may be expanding the app’s functionality further. There’s a possibility that the Instagram video calling feature might arrive at some point in the future.

WABetaInfo reports that the Instagram team is internally working to add a feature to the app which will enable users to video call each other. Users will see a new icon in the navigation bar in a chat, it would be positioned right where one would find it in WhatsApp, which is another Facebook-owned app.

The site adds that this feature will be immediately available to users who open an active chat with another user. This means that users will only be able to video call those who have accepted their request to chat, the icon won’t appear if the other person hasn’t accepted the request.

This feature is said to be currently in development so it might be a while before we see it arrive. While Instagram hasn’t confirmed or denied this, it would make sense for the company to add this functionality, given that it’s already working on a standalone app for Direct messages.
