Instagram has launched one of its most highly anticipated features for content creators and casual users alike: the ability to add a unique, individual caption to each slide within a single carousel post.
Previously, carousel posts were restricted to a single general description. This limitation often disrupted visual storytelling, forcing users to read massive blocks of text in the main description or comments to understand the context of specific images.
Feature Functionality and Flexibility
The new tool is integrated natively into the app’s publishing screen. While preparing a carousel, users can toggle a switch in the text area to enable per-slide captions. This feature is entirely optional; users can still opt for a single caption across the entire album if they prefer the traditional format. This flexibility allows for deep storytelling, making it easier to segment travelogues, step-by-step recipes, or tutorials organically.
This update follows Instagram’s recent expansion of carousel capacity, which doubled from 10 to up to 20 photos or videos per post. Combining 20 distinct media items with 20 dedicated captions significantly enhances opportunities for audience engagement and retention.
Broader Platform Updates
The carousel enhancement is part of a broader push by Meta to modernize the platform’s user experience through substantial software upgrades, particularly for Android devices. Recent updates include:
- Camera Integration: Native support for Google’s ecosystem, enabling Ultra HDR and Night Sight compatibility directly within the Instagram app on compatible Android devices.
- Profile Customization: The ability to freely rearrange the grid layout of posts on a user’s profile.
- Algorithm Controls: New options to reset or reshape recommendation topics on the Explore and Reels tabs.
Availability
The global rollout of individual slide captions has already begun. The feature is expected to reach the entire user base on both iOS and Android within approximately one week. Users should update Instagram via the App Store or Google Play Store to access the new tool.
