While there have been many reports suggesting that Apple is focusing on augmented reality more instead of virtual reality, it appears that the company is developing a new headset that will enable it to compete in the VR space as well against the likes of Google and Facebook. Apple is said to be working on a bonkers “16K” VR headset that it’s aiming to launch in 2020.

CNET reports that Apple is going to release a new headset in 2020 which will combine augmented and virtual reality technologies. The project is internally referred to as the T288 and the scribe hears from sources that this headset is going to feature an 8K display for each eye and that it will connect to a dedicated “box” wirelessly.

The box is reportedly going to be powered by a custom Apple processor “more powerful than anything currently available.” This box will essentially be the brain for the AR and VR headset. The box is said to resemble a PC tower in its current state even though it won’t actually be a Mac computer.

The report does mention that the development is still in early stages so it’s quite possible that Apple might decide to scrap the project if it doesn’t make sense down the line. Apple hasn’t commented on the report as yet so there’s no official word as yet from the company about a VR/AR headset just yet.
