Back in 2014, Irrational Games announced that they would be shutting down. For those unfamiliar, the studio is behind the immensely popular BioShock franchise which led to some speculating as to what the future might hold for the series. However 2K reassured gamers that BioShock is a “permanent franchise”, suggesting that it won’t be going away anytime soon.

However following a series of remasters and bundles, we haven’t really seen any new BioShock content as of late, but that could change soon. In a report from Kotaku, it seems that one of 2K’s studios could be working on a new BioShock title. However we probably shouldn’t hold our breaths as it sounds like it’s pretty early on in development.

The report focuses on Hangar 13, one of 2K’s studios and also the studio behind Mafia III, but in one point in the article, it mentions how some of Hangar 13’s staff moved to a different studio within 2K “to work on an unannounced new BioShock game.” The game was given the codename “Parkside” in which it was revealed to be a new BioShock game.

However the report claims that the team working on it is still pretty small at the moment, suggesting that we could be several years away from seeing it launch. According to one of their sources, “The issue is that Parkside’s not ready for lots of people. They’re trying to be really smart about figuring out what the core thing is. They’re careful about not falling into the same problem every studio has, where they have too many people and nothing for them to do.”

Take it with a grain of salt for now, but like we said, 2K had previously reassured gamers that BioShock will be a permanent franchise in their portfolio, we so suppose it was only a matter of time before they got around to making a new game.
