Samsung DeX was the platform that the company announced with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ last year. Samsung positioned it as the future of the mobile workstation. All you had to do was to get a DeX Station, a pad that offered ports to connect to an external monitor, and plug in your device for a PC-like productivity experience. It didn’t really take off due to multiple factors and it appears that Samsung has gone back to the drawing board for the Galaxy Note 9’s DeX experience.

The previous DeX implementation was inconvenient as it required a special accessory called the DeX Station which itself was expensive. Not many would have bothered purchasing it.

Multiple reports have now revealed that the DeX experience on the Galaxy Note 9 won’t require a special accessory. It will be possible to use DeX without a DeX Station or DeX Pad. What users will need instead is a standard USB Type-C to HDMI adapter.

This will certainly make it very easy and cheap for Galaxy Note 9 owners to power a PC-like productivity experience on their external monitors without having to spend over $100 on an accessory that they may ultimately resign to the novelty bin.

A simple USB Type-C to HDMI adapter costs a few dollars and will reportedly be able to get the job done as well. DeX will launch once the phone is connected to an external display and users will be able to connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
