PlayStation Move Only Needs 1-2MB Of System Memory

The PlayStation Move certainly looks like an interesting device, though we’re fairly sure that many of you out there are wondering how demanding it will be on the console hardware, after all, we wouldn’t want to be stuck with laggy games, right? Well, it seems that there is good news, as in a recent interview, Sony Worldwide Studios VP, Scott Rohde, mentioned that the overhead of the PlayStation Move is insignificant, and the folks over at Joystiq are indicating that the figure is about 1-2MB of RAM, which is certainly good news, especially since the PS3 only has about 256MB of RAM, albeit fast XDR memory. Do you have any unanswered questions regarding the PlayStation Move?

PlayStation Move Hands-On

PlayStation Move Hands-On

PlayStation owners, rejoice! Soon you will stop hearing "when are you getting a Wii?" from your friends and family. Sony has just announced the PlayStation Move at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Presented last year at E3 (in fanfare), it is now a real product that will be sold as a bundle (game+ EyeToy webcam + PS Move) for $100. If you add the secondary controller, and make that a set of two, the bill will fairly quickly. So, how is it?

Mod: Turn Your PSP Into A VU Meter

If you think your PSP is just another boring device, you might want to check out a video of this mod that turns a PSP into a VU Meter. While there probably isn’t much practical use to this mod, it’s certainly something to spruce up your PSP, and differentiate it from the rest of the pack, not to mention something that will help you kill a lot of spare time. Do you have any cool PSP mods that you’ve come up with? Let us know via the comments section. Video after the jump.

Sony Files For Playstation Arc Trademark In Japan

Sony Files For Playstation Arc Trademark In Japan

We’ve previously heard THQ President call Sony’s upcoming PlayStation motion sensing controller the “PlayStation Arc”, and now that Sony has filed for a trademark for the “PlayStation Arc” in Japan, it looks like the name is gaining some serious credibility, and you have to admit that it does sound rather cool. Will the PlayStation Arc take Nintendo’s Wii down a notch, and possibly dominate the motion sensing gaming scene? We’ll have to see the response when Sony officially releases it, and we’re certainly looking forward to it.

Alien Chestburster Emerges From Sony PS3

Alien Chestburster Emerges From Sony PS3

When introducing you to the Alien Assimilation PS3 case mod a while back, we mentioned that it would be cool if there were a mod that sported a facehugger instead. Where we don’t have a picture of one just yet, we have managed to dig up a PS3 case mod with a chestburster bursting out of a PS3. It certainly won’t make your PS3 play games any better, but it will make your PS3 a billion times cooler than most of the PS3s out there. You might want to consult your significant other if you decide to mimic this though, after all, she might be none too happy to have an alien head sticking out from the side of the PS3.

Sony Is Still Making A Loss On Every PS3 Sold

Sony Is Still Making A Loss On Every PS3 Sold

In what is probably not the best revelation from Sony, it seems that the company still takes a loss on every Playstation 3 (PS3) sold. While rumors have suggested that Sony has started to make some profit on the sales of the PS3, according to the Wall Street Journal, Sony loses about 6 cents for every dollar of the PS3 hardware sales. Sony is already looking to address this by attempting to reduce the PS3 production cost by 15% by March 2011, so we’ll have to see how that works out. Of course, the bright side to this bit of news is that the Playstation 3 sales were up by a good 44% year-on-year.

THQ Boss Confirms The Sony PS3 Arc

Word has been going around that Sony’s upcoming motion sensing PS3 controller would be called the Playstation Arc, and now THQ President, Brian Farrell, has confirmed this to the world. It came up while he was speaking during a conference call, and stated:

"Turning to kids, family, and casual, we are focused on our continued leadership in this category, taking advantage of the lower hardware price points that we expect will attract new mass market gamers and new family-friendly platforms such as Microsoft's Natal and Sony's Arc motion controller."

While it’s not an official confirmation from Sony, it’s still good to know that it’ll be called the Sony Arc. What do you think of its name?

PS3 Getting Closer To The Breakeven Point

PS3 Getting Closer To The Breakeven Point

For those of you who didn’t already know, when Sony released the Playstation 3, it was making a loss of about $200 for every PS3 sold. Sony managed to lower the costs and eventually broke even for a while, but with the cheaper PS3 Slim, they’re back to losing money, but the good news is that it’s a lot less money. The latest details from iSuppli indicate that Sony is losing $31.27 per console, which certainly isn’t as bad as losing $200 per unit, right? Hopefully Sony will be able to work things out to get back to the breakeven point at the very least.

PS3 Slim, live pictures pop all over

A lot of folks are happy that Sony has released a fully featured PS3 at a lower price point (at last!). There are a lot of images being tweeted right now, and while most of them show the official Sony photos, some show what seems to be live images of the PS3 Slim and its box. This is getting people excited! Will Sony address consumers demand (for cheap hardware) and its own gross margins objectives at the same time? We’ll know in a couple of quarters I guess. [search PS3 slim twitter photos, via @searchschnitz], photo from engadget

PS3 3.0 Update

Posted on August 18, 2009 11:04 AM

Sony is pushing the PlayStation firmware update out soon. It comes with a number of tweaks, and here are the elements that are of interest to us: 1/Better store navigation: with shortcuts, Sony hopes to make the store easier to navigate. 2/Personalization: custom themes and animated background theme to make this PS3 "yours".

There's also a host of "social stuff” and a what's new board that could be of interest. Check the video out to see the demo by Sony.

PSP Go Gets Zero Pre-orders

PSP Go Gets Zero Pre-orders

The PSP Go might seem desirable to certain quarters, and while it makes more sense to release it at a reduced price due to the removal of the UMD disc drive, it is still priced higher simply because it is brand new, and hence Sony claims it deserves a premium price tag. Well, we're not sure if this piece of news was released just to spite Sony but UK retailers Chips and Grainger Games have reported zero pre-orders for the portable console. Interesting times are ahead - will this be the death knell of the PSP line?

PS3 Price Cut Rumor Surfaces Again

PS3 Price Cut Rumor Surfaces Again

After the PS3-slim hoax (is it a hoax?), hopes for a quick PS3 price cut faded. We talked about how E3 was too early for a price reduction, but an analyst who claims to have information from "industry sources" (whatever that means) says that a $100 price cut is coming in mid-august, right on time for the Madden launch of August 18 and right before back-to-school shopping.

Wait?! PS3+Back to school shopping? This is a purely coincidental association we hope, because it doesn't make a lot of sense. The good thing about predicting a console price cut is that it will eventually come.

Old PSP UMD Games To Get Digital Distribution

Old UMD Games To Get Digital Distribution

Sony has confirmed that some UMD games will become available via the Playstation Network. For people who already own a bunch of UMD games, Sony will create a program to help owners get a digital copy of a game that they already own in UMD form. Sony Believes that 20-25% of PSP 1000 (the original) owners might upgrade to the PSP Go. The details have not been completely worked out, but so far, it looks like Sony won't charge an extra to get old UMD titles to a disc-free format.

What Happened to the PS3 Slim Rumor?

What Happened to the PS3 Slim Rumor?

The Sony Press Conference was arguably as impressive as the Microsoft one (which was a huge surprise, by the way). Many PlayStation fans were ecstatic about the upcoming Sony Motion Controller and there was one last thing that they were hoping for: a price cut for the PS3. It didn't happen of course. So, what happened to the PS3 Slim rumors?

Apparently nothing, but don't dismiss it quite yet. For one, big price cuts usually come at the end of the year. Secondly, while Sony is fighting to get some market share, it would be really dumb to announce a cost-reduced version coming later in the year. In all likelihood, Sony will avoid talking about any cost-reduction to avoid stalling the sales of current PS3 models.

And because Sony doesn't want to alienate their retail partners, they will probably help them sell current models before an upcoming one shows up, so keep your eyes open for stocking/availability issues. We're not confirming that the PS3 slim exists - it is just a rumor- but it is about certain that eventually the PS3 price will come down. It is a matter of when.

The Art of Motion Control: Beyond the Hype

The Art of Motion Control: Beyond the Hype

[E3 2009] I don't think that anyone had envisioned a post-E3 motion controller war, but that's what's happening in the forums and elsewhere right now. After the cool on-stage demos from Microsoft and Sony, gamers are split on what's "better", Sony's Motion Controller magic wand or Microsoft's full body project Natal. Our first take was that Project Natal was "better, but let's try to go beyond the hype to review how each technology works, how it could be used and which might ultimately win.

Metal Gear 'Next' Coming to E3 - Viral Teasers & Official site

Metal Gear 'Next' Coming to E3 - Video & Official site

Konami has started to seriously generate buzz around what seems to be an upcoming Metal Gear title. From the material that's out there, it looks like we're back in the cold-war era, which is the timeframe for MGS3: Snake Eater. The viral videos are rather cryptic, showing an Orange 'Ocelot' Soda... but what's important is that a new MGS title seems underway.

You can visit the official site where there’s much of nothing (except a countdown) - in the meantime, we wonder if this MGS will be a PS3 exclusive or not (we bet it is). Videos after the jump.

PS3 Slim: We've Got a Cease and Desist

PS3 Slim: We've Got a Cease and Desist

Yesterday, we have received a cease and decease letter from a Chinese legal company that claims that the images in relation to the PS3 slim rumor belongs to their client and that we should therefore take this post down.

This China-based law firm does not seem to be the normal legal proxy that Sony Computer Entertainment would be using to contact us, so we pressed them to tell us more, but so far we have not received an answer.

In some sense, this reinforces the theory that the photos that were published show a PS3 knock-off. Wouldn't it be funny if a company that makes such products were to complain about intellectual property? Or may be it's really a PS3 slim and the client is a (leaky) contract manufacturer that Sony is yelling at right now

PS3 Slim A Possibility

PS3 Slim A Possibility

Welcome back grainy images of what could very well be the next iteration of the PS3 - the PS3 Slim. The image seems to be captured in a manufacturing plant, and the new logo as well as plastic shell casing might mean this is a cheap knock-off of the original instead of an actual Sony refresh. What do you think - is this the real deal, or could it be just another fake console that will probably house the parts of a 16-bit machine inside? There is no word of confirmation or denial from Sony as at press time.

PS3 Hardware Update at E3?

PS3 Hardware Update at E3?

The rumor of the day comes from Playstation LifeStyle that "caught word" that Sony "is set to not only reveal the PSP Go at E3, but another hardware redesign will be debuted as well". This could be a new color variant of the PS3 designed to go with this white PS3 controller that we've seen recently. Or maybe it's a completely new PS3 design that is slimmer and sexier, thanks cost-reduction progresses at Sony. Should it be the PS3 motion controller? Well, that not a "re"-design.

It's unlikely that the word "redesign" would be used with a paintjob but who knows, it's the recession after all.

Logitech Harmony PS3 Adapter to Launch This Month

Logitech Harmony Adapter to Launch This Month

Yes, you know that Logitech is preparing a Harmony Adapter for the PS3 (we told you), but back then, the question was: when will it launch? The word on the street is "by the end of May". At some point, Best Buy was listing the product and we know from there that the price is $59.99. That's not too bad for the luxury of not using the PS3 game controller as a remote (I do it, it's kind of annoying sometimes, but is mostly OK). Specs in the full post.
