Rewind your memories and see whether you remember CueCat – a bar code reader that supposedly connects magazine readers with digital material. Never heard of it? That’s OK – Microsoft ought to do a better job promoting its upcoming Microsoft Tag, which could very well be CueCat reincarnated (a cat has nine lives after all, doesn’t it?). Microsoft Tag keeps up with the times, however, by doing away with the need for a tag, but it does require your cellphone to have a camera in order to scan a particular bar code, allowing digital content to appear on the phone itself after doing so. Such tags can be placed in magazines, newspapers, business cards, products as well as large outdoor signs, making it the hyperlink in the physical realm. No idea on how Microsoft will monetize Tag, but it will remain free at the moment until they figure something out. For more context, check out the YouTube video above.
