half-life-3-rumor-crowbar-screen-shot

One of the most iconic first person shooter games in the world, Half Life has been the topic of discussion as of late. With the third installment of the successful franchise nowhere to be seen, fans of the game have had to suffer with cruel April Fool’s jokes and intriguing t-shirt photos by the game developers, Valve. Now however, the co-founder of the company, Gabe Newell who had a discussion with the folks over at Seven Day Cooldown talked at length about a sequel to one of the first games to be released on the company’s Steam content platform called Ricochet.

With the prospect of Half Life 3-related news, the people involved were not at all happy that Newell was going on about a game that no one really enjoyed in comparison to Half Life. But the team at Seven Day Cooldown seems to think that despite Newell revealing info about a Ricochet 2, they doubt there will be one and that it is actually Half Life 3 that he was reportedly droning on about.

Newell said, “In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance, we end up changing our minds as we’re going through and developing stuff. So as we’re thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you’re saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we’d life to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2. The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we’re going through would probably drive people more crazy (sic) than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what’s happening next.”

If Newell was in fact referring to a sequel to the first Ricochet game, then his phrase about how they would like to be super-transparent would make sense. However, Valve is known for having a sense of humor and that is why Newell’s reluctance to say anything more besides cryptic phrases pointing in the direction of a game that is called Ricochet 2 but should be kept under wraps like it is the company’s flagship game title does bring up a few question marks. From the excerpt containing what Newell said in the discussion, what is your opinion? Could Ricochet 2 be a codename for Half Life 3 to throw us off? Or do you think that he really meant it?
