Western Digital has just announced that they will be shipping the Scorpio Blue hard drive to the masses. What makes the Scorpio Blue so special? For starters, it was specially designed to cater to Ultrabooks, and with word that Intel will be releasing at least 75 more Ultrabooks later this year, it makes perfect sense that Western Digital has decided to step up to the plate and do something about the situation. Measuring a mere 7mm thin, the Scorpio Blue hard drive will do its bit to offer a careful balance between the physical size of an SSD as well as the advantage of a hard drive’s capacity without breaking the bank.

7mm is definitely slimmer than the regular 9.5mm measurement that is found in regular laptop hard drives. Never mind that it is that thin – it can still deliver up to 500GB of storage space, and will retail for approximately $100. For those who feel that they do not need that much storage, there is the 320GB model which will be $20 more affordable. Each Scorpio Blue hard drive will be equipped with 8MB of cache memory, sips less juice and will run nice and quiet. [Press Release]
